Celtic’s early January transfer window has been overshadowed by reports linking Kieran Tierney with a stunning return to Parkhead.

Despite returning to full fitness, Arsenal has not exercised the Scotland international’s one-year extension provision, allowing him to become a free agent this summer.

Wasting no time, Celtic are exploring a potential pre-contract for Kieran Tierney as well as the option to loan the iconic figure for the final six months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Fielding questions with caution, Brendan Rodgers has refused to be drawn on Tierney returning to Celtic amid mounting stories that he could be on his way back to Glasgow. Former players coming back have recently become a familiar talking point, with Mark Wilson suggesting Jota should be on the Hoops’ radar as they search for reinforcements. Michael Stewart has now provided his verdict on both individuals and whether he thinks moves for the pair could be viable.

Michael Stewart shares ‘gut’ Kieran Tierney Celtic return verdict.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, Stewart stated that Tierney and Jota would be welcome additions to Celtic and that their connection with Glasgow would give various benefits.

He began by addressing Tierney: “There has been so many gossip and conversation about Kieran Tierney, who has six months left on his contract. My instinct tells me Kieran Tierney would be interested in returning to Celtic. I honestly believe he would. Could this happen in January? I wouldn’t disregard it.”

Later, Stewart added, “The caliber of Kieran Tierney on a free transfer? Jota for £5–6 million? There aren’t many players available that have a connection to the club and understand what it’s about. As much as you want to go out and discover new talent, these guys are still young and hungry.

“Jota is 25 and Tierney is 27 so these are still young players that have got many, many good years ahead of them.”

Celtic’s Champions League appeal could influence future transfers.
Tierney and Jota are both valuable assets, but neither has a realistic chance of playing Champions League football in their current situations.

However, Celtic might provide that platform if they make it through the league portion of the campaign, which requires three more points in their final two games against Young Boys or Aston Villa.

Tierney is the far more realistic candidate of the two to come in. Could European progression ensure he seals a dramatic return? You would imagine there is a good chance, though you can never be sure.
